Higher Education CoP - July 2018 - Team Science in Community Engaged Health Disparities Research

Abstract

This presentation will discuss principles in community engagement and leadership at the community level.  These principles include: collaborative partnerships, incorporating the voice and agency of the community and sharing of knowledge through bi-directional learning while incorporating bicultural health workers. Exemplars from community engaged research addressing Latino equity will be used to showcase how these principles can be put into action and ultimately influence community and population health. We will also discuss the opportunities for Latino nurses to lead change to advance Latino health and wellbeing.

Understanding major challenges will increase your chances of success. These challenges include: ensure you respond to your community/partnerships in a timely manner, balance your research with action, align your community with funding, know that organizational structures may present as barriers to success and finally establish equity in your partnerships.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will get a better understanding for the following:

  1. Describe principles of community engagement and community leadership.
  2. Provide exemplars of how principles of community engagement can be implemented through community health improvement approaches addressing Latino health equity.
  3. Discuss the opportunities Latino nurse leaders have to influence community and population health.
