Adaptive Leadership: Techniques Thrive in VUCA

Leadership is no longer about having a positional powerbase; you must make leadership a verb not a noun. To do this you must start thinking in terms of self-leadership and utilizing the referent powerbase instead of basing leadership models on “heroic” leadership. On top of this the rapid pace of change, disruption and complexity is requiring a comprehensive change in how you attack your team’s skill requirements. How we work has changed, or at least how successful companies work has changed. So, are you ready to face the future of work? Are you ready to change how you conduct your work? Can you define the value of the outcomes of the work to make the right decisions when most things are unknown? Adaptive Leadership is the tool to help you cross this next chasm.

Adaptive Leadership was developed out of Harvard University specifically around using human psychology, evolutionary biology, and behavioral economics to deal with rapid change. An Adaptive leader must change their approach to problem solving, testing, communicating, and executing. They must understand the implications of their work on the overall system and must constantly filter their work based on the value of the outcome it produces.

These skills are critical for any professional regardless of the process or framework they work within. You must understand the whys of the practices or frameworks you work within to pivot and adjust quickly in the absence of a detailed “playbook” on how to handle volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) situations.

Learn:

  • The critical elements of defining value
  • Balance needed to execute in rapid change
  • Systems thinking and dealing with adaptive challenges over technical issues
  • The mind set required for adaptive leaders
  • The work approach and critical concepts
  • Bridging adaptive leadership to your project work
