 egic planning process takes 3-18 months for most organizations. It require
 s a detailed project plan and well-managed implementation. The result of s
 trategic planning is\, of course\, a program plan for the organization\, w
 hich will likely spin off many smaller programs and projects. Since many p
 ublic-sector organizations and most nonprofits have no special staff exper
 tise in project management\, it is no surprise that many of them suffer th
 rough the strategic planning process. Even when a plan is created successf
 ully\, many subsequently fail to implement successful programs. In this pr
 esentation\, I will talk about my experience working with strategic planni
 ng in non-commercial organizations\, describing common problems and critic
 al success factors for strategic planning in public-sector and nonprofit a
 gencies.
