Medicinal / Pharmaceutical / Other Utilities of Mangroves


Khalsi(Aegiceras corniculatum):- It will protect coastal area and flood of Sundarban. It will help to create rural livelihoods. Honey from its flower is excellent and its market value is very high. The local peoples can collect honey from this instead of entering deep forest and the risk factor of collecting honey from deep forest will be reduced. In this way the local livelihoods will be created. Aegiceras corniculatum extract has analgesic properties which supports a fight against diabetes. Aegiceras corniculatum a mangrove plant has been using for many years for the treatment of many inflammatory and autoimmune diseases like atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and is well known as a folklore medicine constituting various novel chemical constituent.

Peyara Bain ( Avicennia marina):- Various pharmacological activities of the plant have been reported including antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial and many others.

Kankra (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza):- Charcoals and firewood is made of Kankra. Cheap furniture, box, packing case, boat wood, hardboard etc. are found from Kankra. This is also used as source of dyes for fishnets ‘ropes, sails and clothing.

Geoya  (Excoecaria agallocha):- The wood of the Geoya  is used for making newsprint paper. So this kind of paper has economic value.
