Higher Education CoP : Team Science Leads to Success

Abstract

With the growing intricacy of scientific research projects, the collaborative nature of scientific investigations and research has sky rocketed.  Team Science focuses the collaborative effort by leveraging the expertise and strengths of diverse professionals from different fields to address complex challenges.

The conversation has shifted to focus on Team Science to address multi-faceted problems across diverse sectors including chronic disease, energy, climate change, public policy, etc.  Consequently, the interest, encouragement and investment in Team Science has surged.

Research investigators across many specialties and settings are engaging in team-based research initiatives. These include small and large teams, single and multi-disciplinary groups, and involving multiple stakeholders such as scientists, community members and leaders, and policy makers. Academic institutions, industry, national governments, and other funders are also investing in team science initiatives.

The success of team science is influenced by a variety of factors. These factors influence each stage of an initiative, impacting efficiency, productivity, and overall effectiveness.   The presentation will explain the Team Science concepts and delve into factors that influence and shape Team Science.

About the Speaker: Joann Keyton, PhD

Joann Keyton (Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 1987) is Professor of Communication at North Carolina State University. In addition to publications in scholarly journals and edited collections, she has published three textbooks for courses in group communication, research methods, and organizational culture in addition to co-editing an organizational communication case book. Keyton was editor of the Journal of Applied Communication Research, Volumes 31-33, and the founding editor of Communication Currents, Volumes 1-5. Currently, she is Editor of Small Group Research. She is a founder of the Interdisciplinary Network for Group Research.
