Abstract:
Managers are keenly focussed on identifying and employing knowledge, skills and traits that can contribute to the productivity, and success of their team and the broader organization. Periodic appraisal of employee performance compared to established metrics, is required for sustained achievement of team and organizational goals.
During a performance review matters related to tenure and pay come into sharp focus. This can therefore be a stessful and uncomfortable activity for both manager and employee. If handled thoughtfully and executed effectively, a performance review can be an opportune time to refocus, energize and motivate employees.
Interpersonal and communications skills are essential elements of an effective review. Managers must enumerate achievements and reward the employee accordingly, but must also define and discuss areas for improvement, and set development goals for stronger performance in the future.
Employee input must also be encouraged to obtain a deeper understanding of how results were achieved, and to discover ideas which may be implemented to improve the performance of others within the team and possibly the entire organization. The manager must therefore be an active listener.
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn:
- How to prepare for a review
- What to cover during the review
- What comes after the review is completed
About the Speaker
Silvia Rodriguez joined NC Project Leaders Toastmasters in October 2017. She is a manager who is striving for peak performance by pursuing the Toastmasters Pathways Education program, with focus on the Motivational Strategies path. During a recent motivational speech delivered to our club, she encouraged us to pursue self development, by setting milestones. She advised us not to wait for January—the season of New Year’s resolution—but to set and achieve milestones at any time during the year.
