Abstract and Learning Objectives:

Meet current and former project management interns as they describe their experiences and answer your questions! Several panelists have been involved in founding the new Developing Project Management Trainees (DEVELPMNT) program. DEVELPMNT focuses on giving participants training in project management while pairing them with internship mentors to get hands-on experience useful for pursuing job opportunities post-graduation or in their next career stage. If you are interested in becoming an intern or a mentor, please join us to learn more.

Speaker Bios:

Emily Miller

Emily Miller is the Director of Mentorship for the Duke PM CoP. Previously, she acted as Director of Programming and has been a PMCoP member since its inception in 2017. She is currently employed at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as a Senior Scientific Program Manager. There, she is part of the Catalyze program where she has been working with the core team to stand up this new initiative, kick off the first cohorts of translational research studies, and generate director level reports to assist with strategic planning. With the Cure Sickle Cell team, Emily works to stand up the new Biomanufacturing Consortium and guide projects in the Data Consortium.

Previously, Emily worked at Duke University Clinical and Translational Science Institute as a Project Leader where she managed a portfolio of translational research projects including early drug discovery, medical devices, and data projects. She was also part of the myRESEARCHnavigator team where she onboarded over 100 new faculty in basic and translational science at Duke. Before transitioning to project management, she worked in basic biology research for nearly 10 years in areas including cytoskeleton, pediatric brain cancer, and craniofacial development. Emily holds a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Maine, a Ph.D. in Genetics and Genomics from Duke, and a PMP Certification.

Delisa Clay

Delisa Clay is a 5th year PhD candidate in the department of Cell Biology at Duke working in the lab of Don Fox. Her thesis research focuses on understanding DNA damage tolerance mechanisms using fruit flies as a model system.  In August 2020, she began working as an intern for the Duke PMCoP, working with the communications subcommittee to revamp the new website. She is one of the three training program managers for the DEVELPMNT program. Her goal is to apply her training gained during her PhD, as well as her experiences with the Duke PMCoP, to a career in project management. Prior to her studying at Duke, she received her BS in Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA,  where she began doing research as an NIH IMSD (Initiative for Maximizing Student Development) scholar.

Becca Moreci

Becca is a PhD candidate in the Cell Biology and Dermatology Departments at Duke University where she is studying skin development.  Prior to her graduate work, she received her BA from the College of Wooster (OH) and worked as a research technician at the University of Pittsburgh. She holds research experience in fields ranging from immunology to reproductive health and endangered species protection. Becca aims to translate her diverse scientific background and skills into a career as a Project Manager. She joined the Duke PMCoP in January 2020 and serves as a Project Coordinator for the Steering Committee. She is one of three DEVELPMNT Training Program Managers.

Sara Payne

Sara Payne is currently a senior graduate student pursuing her degree in Cell Biology at Duke University. In the Sherwood lab, she is investigating the role of basement membrane interactions in adhering neighboring tissues together. Interested in advancing her project management skill set, she interned under the supervision of Mary Ellen Matta in Duke PMCoP, and is one of three program coordinators for DEVELPMNT (DEVELoping Project MaNagement Trainees), a pilot Project Management mentoring group. Prior to pursuing her graduate studies, she received her BA from Barnard College and worked as a research technician and office manager in a blood stem cell lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NYC.
