Higher Education CoP May 2020: Strategies for Effective Workplace Writing

Abstract

Writing is important—albeit often neglected—skill in the workplace. Clear communication can make the difference between a successful project and an unmitigated disaster, and yet many of us struggle to find the time or willpower to make our writing as effective as possible. It may be that you bear the scars of dreadful grammar lessons past, or maybe you just haven’t thought much about what your writing is (or isn’t) getting across to your readers. Whatever the case, this workshop will hopefully convince you that your time is well spent when you devote a little mental energy thinking through what you put into print. We’ll review common workplace writing foibles, as well as some simple rules to ensure that your written communication is as high-impact as possible.

Objectives
Attendees will learn:
1) Rules of high-impact workplace communication
2) Common mistakes encountered in workplace writing

About the Speaker:

Amanda McMillan is Senior Staff Director for Workforce Development at the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute, helping to equip faculty, staff, and trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in translational medicine. She serves as a conduit, facilitator, and information clearinghouse, matching people with resources, making connections among schools and departments, and cataloguing the myriad educational opportunities available at Duke so that they are easily accessible to those who need them. Amanda also assists in the development of new content to fill curricular gaps as the field of translational science evolves. Previously, she served as a medical editor at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and before that an assistant editor at UNC Press.
