Higher Education CoP Sep 2020: A Dog in the Cancer Fight: The Consortium for Canine Comparative Oncology

Abstract:

This talk explains the field of Comparative Oncology - the study of cancer across different species.  It explores the unique collaboration known as The Consortium for Canine Comparative Oncology (C3O), a formal consortium consisting of physicians, veterinarians, and scientists from the Duke Cancer Institute and the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  As a large project that merges traditionally separate "silos," we will consider the challenges, pitfalls, and successes of having multidisciplinary teams working together while dwelling in completely different worlds.

Learning Objectives:

  • Team Science
  • Communication

  • Trust
  • Strategizing

About the Speaker:

Will Eward

Dr. William Eward took a nontraditional route on his journey to becoming an Orthopaedic Oncologist. First, he obtained his DVM from Auburn University and became a small animal veterinarian. He was particularly captivated by his animals with cancer and decided to return to medical school, receiving an MD degree from the University of Vermont. After completing residency at Duke University, he travelled to the University of Toronto for a fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology. He currently is on faculty at Duke University with an adjunct appointment at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. As an Orthopaedic Oncology Surgeon, he specializes in resecting tumors while preserving and reconstructing limbs that have been jeopardized by sarcoma either in soft tissue or in bone. As a clinician scientist, he also runs a basic science laboratory. His laboratory efforts at Duke are geared to identify common elements between types of cancer across different species. Dr. Eward is an internationally recognized expert in the field of Comparative Oncology, and is the director of the Duke Comparative Oncology Group and Chair of the Consortium for Canine Comparative Oncology (C3o) a collaboration between Duke Cancer Institute and North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, he is a member of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s multinational One Health Committee. Will has received numerous honors and awards over the years and most recently was awarded an ABC (American-British-Canadian) travelling fellowship as one of five surgeons to represent the United States on a tour of the UK and South Africa. When Will is not in the hospital or lab, he enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and many dogs, swimming and running.

We will also be hosting special guests from Hope Animal Rescue!

Our mission centers on rescuing dogs that would die without our help and by providing resources to families throughout our community. By doing this, we hope more pets are able to remain in their homes during times of financial hardship or uncertainty.

Hope Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based rescue. Currently, HAR is unable to host in-person events because of COVID-19. However, this hasn’t stopped them from adopting out more than 225 dogs to new homes since the beginning of March! They need our help; attend the webinar on 9/24/2020 and consider donating or purchasing non-medical grade masks from their Masks for Mutts fundraiser. Or you can show off your sewing skills and volunteer to make more masks! Sarah Pai initiated this effort because she had a very sick foster named Mario who needed expensive surgery. Let’s honor Mario and this wonderful effort; Sarah and her team have raised over $14,000, with 100% of the profits going to rescue more dogs.
