PMO CoP: May 2018: The State of the Enterprise PMO
The purpose of this month’s PMO Community of Practice discussion is to solicit different perspectives from local members of the PMI community that have experience leading and/or working with their organization’s PMO. The discussion will focus on topics that are relevant to the “State of the Enterprise PMO”. These topics include:
- Overall maturity, goals and challenges of the PMO
- Sponsorship and strategic alignment of the PMO
- Impact of technologies and tools on the PMO projects and processes
- Methodologies leveraged, including the current role of Agile in the organization
- Workforce development
- Gain perspectives on the current role of the PMO within specific local organizations
- Understand the investments organization are making in technologies, methodologies, and people
- Promote discussion and sharing around current and challenges facing the Enterprise PMO
Panel: Barbara Bostonian, Wesley Cole & Willie Hucks
Barbara C. Bostian, MPM, PMP
Barbara Bostian currently is the Director, Project Management Office for Railinc. Prior to this position, she founded the PMO and served as the Enterprise Project Management Officer for the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Her project experience in private industry has included over 15 years of IT project management for corporations in the pharmaceutical, IT and service industries. She is a certified Project Manager trainer from Boston University and holds a MPM (Masters in Project Management) from Western Carolina University. Her undergraduate degree in Business is from Wake Forest University. Barbara is a past President of the North Carolina Chapter of PMI and has also been involved in the PMI Global Committees for PMO of the Year Award and Project of the Year Award.
Wesley Cole, PMP
Wesley Cole works at First Citizens Bank which is the largest family-controlled bank in the country. At First Citizens, Wesley heads the Corporate Project Office and Technology Business Management team. The Project Office portion of his team is made up of a combination of Program and Project Managers as well as project support staff. The PMO is responsible for managing both infrastructure and business application projects for First Citizens. Prior to joining First Citizens, Wesley worked for CP&L/Progress Energy for 19 years. He started his career as a COBOL programmer (which tells you how old he is) and took on increasing levels of responsibility through the years and eventually ended up in project management. Wesley is a graduate of Virginia Tech where he earned his degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. He is also a charter member of the Triangle PMO Executive Council – a working group of PMO Directors from several of the Triangle’s premier companies.
Willie Hucks, PMP
Willie Hucks is the Deputy Chief Information Officer and Service Transition Director at the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Having worked with the Department for the past 28 years, he spent the first 20 years on the business side in the Sales and Use Tax Division as an Auditor and then a Revenue Administration Officer working on tax law, policy, administration, system implementations, and internal operations. In the Sales and Use Tax Division, he worked closely with Information Technology and other divisions to lead efforts to ensure systems and applications were designed, developed, and functioned to meet statutory requirements and department needs. Thereafter, he joined the Enterprise Project Management Office as a Project Manager and later was named Business Solutions Architect. In his current role, he has oversight of the Project Management Office, Technical Design and Documentation, Database Administration, Java and Middleware Applications, Mainframe Applications, and Systems and User Acceptance Testing.
