Abstract:   A strategic planning process takes 3-18 months for most organizations. It requires a detailed project plan and well-managed implementation. The result of strategic planning is, of course, a program plan for the organization, which will likely spin off many smaller programs and projects. Since many public-sector organizations and most nonprofits have no special staff expertise in project management, it is no surprise that many of them suffer through the strategic planning process. Even when a plan is created successfully, many subsequently fail to implement successful programs. In this presentation, I will talk about my experience working with strategic planning in non-commercial organizations, describing common problems and critical success factors for strategic planning in public-sector and nonprofit agencies.

Learning Objectives:  Attendees will get a better understanding of the following:

  • Strategic planning process
  • Strategic planning pitfalls and how to avoid them
  • Critical success factors for strategic planning
