Prof Dev: Leadership and Social/Emotional Intelligence: Making Constructive Use of Our Differences

Prof Dev: Leadership and Social/Emotional Intelligence: Making Constructive Use of Our Differences

Abstract

Leadership is all about relationships and communication; highly effective leadership is all about mastering relationships and communication. This entails acquiring mastery of both self and others – i.e., self-awareness and social-awareness. This course is designed to heighten both your emotional and social intelligence through leadership models, concepts, measures, anecdotes, statistics, and research findings.

This course includes a leadership communication measure that goes beyond highlighting strengths and potential pitfalls. Even if you have already taken the Myers Briggs measure, you will be exposed to a new application that allows you to observe and experience in real time what it means to make constructive use of your differences with others. As a practical takeaway, this process will enable you to apply the coursework on emotional and social intelligence with your own team members (and family!) following the course. No other leadership or communication measure lends itself to this fascinating process.

Finally, you will learn how permanent, positive change evolves through several leadership development change models and concepts such that you can perpetuate your learnings from today’s course. Improve all relationships of significance in your life via your ability to create buy-in, comfort in communicating uncomfortable messages, and harmony. That’s leadership.

Knowledge Base / Theory: You will leave understanding the essentials of:

  • Leadership, leadership development, social/emotional intelligence: Definitions,  styles and training thereof today and yesteryear; significance for career success
  • The various buzz words regarding (in)effective leadership: Social and emotional intelligence, self-awareness, authenticity, transparency, servant leadership, etc.
  • How leadership is different from management and their interrelationship
  • Individualistic barriers to effective leadership, communication, and relationships; what it takes to make positive changes (both the nature and stages)
  • Statistics/research supporting need for leadership development: Their impact on (dis)engaged workforce, managerial effectiveness, retention, ability to motivate, etc.
  • Your unique leadership communication style and your inherent strengths and weaknesses according to how you actually play out your style (assessment results)
  • How others’ leadership/communication type can support or undermine yours, and how to make constructive use of those differences while capitalizing on similarities

Practicalities / Applying the Knowledge: You will leave understanding how to…

  • Identify your strengths, potential limitations, and triggers to capitalize on specific communication strengths and minimize specific communication liabilities
  • Identify the strengths, potential limitations, and triggers in others close to you to modify specific interpersonal relationship dynamics to optimize trust
