Chapter March 2017: Create an Agile Cultural Transformation in your Organization

Abstract: Throughout different parts of the business agile methodologies are revolutionizing the way we think about work. A transparent and collaborative approach to product development can be accomplished through the lean and adaptive methodologies that are found in agile. In today's rapidly changing market the ability for flexible and fast development of products are necessary. Learn tools and techniques to help you to develop and execute your contracts. Technology companies have been using Agile for years, now any function in a company that develops a product can use agile. Agile techniques support product development through:

  • Shorter more manageable releases
  • Valuing working contracts over comprehensive documentation
  • Rapid responses to changes

Collaborative development and execution throughout the life of the project Agile will take time to transition to. This is a culture shift much as TQM and Six Sigma were. Training and team development is imperative to the effective use and implementation of agile. The benefits will include an informed workforce and stakeholders that are engaged in the project. They will work together for a mutually agreeing and collaborative team. Agile originated in software development and has expanded to all deliverable oriented projects. The benefits of agile techniques will provide the transformation that we must have with a leaner workforce. Agile is inclusive of many of techniques. Scrum is by far the largest followed by other techniques such as Lean. At the center of Agile are small teams that are empowered to get the work done. Often a scrum master is used to facilitate the team to keep moving forward. There will be specific process that the team must follow to be successful. They include daily “scrums” that enable the team to look at the work they have done and what they must do in a short 15 minute meeting. Much like other management initiatives there are two essential components. Senior leadership supporting the initiative. They must understand at a high level what the initiative entails in methodology, resources, and effort. The second component is that the organization change the culture through the workforce so that they understand what they are to do in this new and innovative technique.

Objectives:

• Understand the benefits of Agile

• Identify key components of the Agile methodology

• Discover techniques to change your organizations culture

• Develop a plan to implement Agile in your organization
