Abstract
Speech contests are part of the Toastmasters’ life. They are fun, allow for additional leadership and speaking opportunities, and as a bonus, provide great networking outside the club.
You’ve been chosen to be a part of the contest planning team, and must therefore organize the contest from start to finish, while ensuring that all attendees will have a fun time. Maybe you want to hide or run away, but trust me, YOU CAN DO IT! Regular attendance at Toastmasters meetings, along with filling the various roles, provide all the skills needed for organizing a speech contest.
The presentation will discuss all the steps. From planning, communicating to mic check: supporting a successful speech contest organization from start to giving out trophies.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will learn about the:
- Types of speech contests
- Roles needed to conduct a speech contest
- Resources for supporting the speech contest organization
- Process to plan and conduct the speech contest
About the Speaker
Kirsten Messmer works for PPD, collecting and interpreting regulatory affairs intelligence for pharmaceutical product development. She has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, along with Regulatory Affairs Certification. She joined Bull City Toastmasters in 2015, and served as Sergeant At Arms and President. Kirsten is also a member of Top Triangle Toastmasters, an advance club. Last year she was Area 71 Director, which required that she organize the area contests.
However, that’s not how her contest organizing experience started. It rather started with being dropped in the deep end as an assistant area director, while the current area director was on vacation, not returning until a few days before the contest.
Kirsten is an avid photographer.
