Speaker:  Zbigniew Kabala, DTM, Phd

Abstract:

A brief history of the decline of our memorization skills, due to increasing delegation of information to external devices--writing, recordings, computers, smart phones, etc,--will be presented. Five short scientific experiments on memorization of different types of information will be conducted and conclusions will be drawn. The ancient Latin document (2,000+ years old), Rhetorica ad Herennium, will be discussed along with the Memory Palace memorization technique that the document teaches. Justification of this technique will be given in terms of the findings from the presented experiments. An application of the Memory Palace technique will be given. If time permits, a variant of the technique for memorizing names will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: after hearing the keynote, the attendees should be able

  1. to classify different types of information according to their memorization difficulty,
  2. to convert convert the hard-to-memorize types of information to the easy-to-memorize types,
  3. to use the Memory-Palace technique to memorize their speeches and presentations,
  4. to use mnemonic techniques to enhance the effectiveness of their Memory-Palace technique, and
  5. to use a variant of the Memory-Palace technique for memorizing faces and names.
