Green Tides: Sustaining Sundarbans
Empower Youth, Restore Mangroves, Protect Communities
Green Tides: Sustaining Sundarbans is a project aimed at preserving the unique ecosystem of the Sundarbans, a mangrove forest in INDIA. Sundarbans is a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. It spans the area from the Hooghly River in India's state of West Bengal to the Baleswar River in Bagladesh. It comprises closed and open mangrove forests, land used for agricultural purpose, mudflats and barren land, and is intersected by multiple tidal streams and channels. Four protected areas in the Sundarbans are enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, viz. Sundarbans National Park, Sundarbans West, Sundarbans South and Sundarbans East Wildlife Sanctuaries. (Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundarbans) This project focuses on promoting sustainable practices that will help to preserve the biodiversity of the region and support the livelihoods of local communities. The project includes initiatives such as reforestation, conservation education, and the development of sustainable tourism. By supporting Green Tides, you can help to protect one of the world's most important natural treasures and ensure a better future for the people who depend on it. Join us in our efforts to sustain the Sundarbans for generations to come.
Social – Economical goals
- Aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #15 (https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal15)
- Protection of coastal areas. Planting mangroves can reduce shoreline erosion and can protect coastal communities against coastal and flooding, high winds and waves, tsunamis.
- Restoration of a mangrove ecosystem. The aim is to support livelihood without destroying the mangrove forest. This could be achieved by sustainable harvesting of mangrove products such as firewood, timber, and other marine products like crabs, fish and shells.
- Conservation of existing mangrove forests. This provides breeding grounds for fisheries and preserving biodiversity. This can be achieved through the creation of protected sites, national parks, nature reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries.
- Carbon absorption (sink). Mangroves absorb more carbon than the other land-based forests.
- Livelihood for youth
- Crab & Prawn farming can be started within 1.5 year, local youth can earn from that. Along with that the risk of going to dense forest to catch crab will decrease.
- Once the planted trees will grow-up then those will be used as raw material for Pharmaceutical products, Honey & Wax collection (Natural & Bee-Box).
Youth Development Plan
