Presentation Title:  Delivering Successful Projects …Every Time

Presentation Description:  Although many successful project management practitioners are “accidental project managers,” successful projects should not be “accidental.” By utilizing major contributors to project success and avoiding the leading causes of project failure, project success should be predictable and repeatable, instead of a hit-and-miss occurrence.

As project practitioners, regardless of our project role (e.g., developers, project leads, QA, testers, release managers, project managers), we all have a responsibility to do our part in contributing to successful project delivery.  Delivering successful projects is a team effort.  Successful projects are a team success.

Research studies have identified the reasons for project failure and reasons for project success.  This presentation describes an approach for consistent delivery of successful projects, by focusing on three major contributors to project success, implemented in collaboration with stakeholders:

  1. Effective Requirements Management: Research studies have identified poor requirements management processes (or lack thereof) as a leading cause of project failure. PMI’s 2014 Pulse of the Profession® on Requirements Management – A Core Competency for Project and Program Success found that 47% of unsuccessful projects fail to meet goals due to poor requirements management.
  2. Embracing Project, Program, Portfolio Management (PPPM):  PMI’s 2015 Pulse of the Profession® on Capturing the Value of Project Management found that organizations that create a culture of project management with highly mature PPPM through standardized practices and by aligning projects and programs to their strategy deliver 64% of their projects successfully.
  3. Executive management support and sustained commitment: Multiple research studies, including PMI’s 2014 Pulse Research show that having actively engaged executive sponsors is the top driver of project success.
