PMO CoP: March 2018 - Using Structured Data to Make Portfolio and Project Execution Decisions

Abstract:  
A required capability for effective and efficient portfolio management is having structured data to make decisions about which projects to undertake, to assess project execution, and to identify overall trends. This presentation will discuss the State’s Enterprise Project Management Office implementation of decision point workflows throughout the project lifecycle to monitor project execution and enable better project portfolio related decisions. This discussion will include an explanation of the weekly measures (CPI, SPI, decision points) used in the State’s Project Online implementation, as well as a description of dashboard and portfolio analysis tools and techniques.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  1. Understand the benefits of using Decision Points (vs. Phase Gates) to manage project execution
  2. Discuss key metrics used to make portfolio related decisions
  3. Discuss use of project dashboards and portfolio analysis to enable prioritization of efforts
