Communications CoP: “Scientists say…” critically evaluating scientific news for non-scientistsThis is a NCPMI Communication & Public Speaking CoP- NCPL Toastmasters Club Meeting. Meeting will be convened by Virtual Conference Call Abstract
The infectious disease COVID-19 is crippling most aspects of society. Ending this pandemic will require scientists to develop ways of diagnosing, treating and preventing the disease, and the public is understandably eager to know how close scientists are to these goals. However, scientists often struggle to effectively communicate their research to non-experts, and both politicians and the media are imperfect intermediaries. Using examples relevant to COVID-19, this talk will help non-scientists to evaluate what scientists say and understand what they really mean. It will also provide advice for effectively discussing technical information with lay audiences.
Learning Objectives:
About the Speaker Dr. Andrew Macintyre is an assistant professor at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, where he leads a team developing treatments and vaccines for infectious diseases.
