Communications CoP: Thinking About Parliamentary Procedure- Robert’s Rules of Order

The Meeting includes prepared speeches, table topics, networking, evaluations, jokes and multiple meeting operations roles.

Abstract:

Most organizations and committees are confronted with the challenge of holding effective meetings. At the same time, most people feel insecure with parliamentary procedure most often codified in Robert’s Rules of Order Revised. In this discussion, David Lindquist will show how to think about parliamentary procedure and explain the most-often used elements of Robert’s Rules.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will get a better understanding of the following:

  • Why we use Robert’s Rules of Order
  • Prerequisites for effective parliamentary procedure
  • Basic mechanics of motions and amendments
  • Selected subsidiary, privileged and incidental motions.

About the Speaker:

DavidLindquist David R. Lindquist, DTM, is a veteran specialist in market research and audience targeting with a B.A. from University of Connecticut and service at the Gallup Organization, Durham Herald Sun, and AICPA among others. He started his own consulting practice in 2014. David joined Toastmasters in 2012, earned two DTMs in 2016 and 2017, and is the 2014 District 37 International Speech champion representing North Carolina in the International semifinals held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is currently a member of Cary Toastmasters, Top Triangle Toastmasters and Bull City Toastmasters. David is also a passionate wildflower gardener, birder, and member of North Carolina Master Chorale.

PMO CoP June 2020-Conduct Productive Meetings While Working Remotely

Abstract

Managing a meeting tends to be a skill often overlooked by leaders and managers. A meeting can be an efficient and powerful way to make decisions, disseminate information, build relationships or otherwise get things done, but only when it is productive. In this session, Darlena will discuss how to conduct productive meetings, while engaging participants in activities aimed at reinforcing learned skills. This presentation uses a framework provided by Toastmasters International—among the premier public speaking and professional development organizations in the world. It approaches meeting productivity in the context of working remotely.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will get a better understanding of the following:

  • How to prepare for a meeting
  • Create a concise agenda
  • Maintain order and respect
  • Evaluate and follow-up effectively

About the Speaker

DarlenaSwann

Darlena Swann, MBA, joined Toastmasters International to overcome her fear of public speaking. This year she hopes to become a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)--the organization's highest educational award. She is a member of two clubs: Blue Devil and Bull City Toastmasters. In 2018-19 she served as Area Director and earned the Select Distinguished status.

Darlena is an educator in the Durham Public School System, CEO and Founder of her own nonprofit, Boss Lady Enterprise, and author of the motivational book titled, "The Ladybug - Words from the Heart." Her passions are community outreach service, youth mentoring, yoga, and professional development.
