Healthcare CoP: “Scientists say…” critically evaluating science for non-scientists

Virtual Conference Call

Abstract

The infectious disease COVID-19 is crippling most aspects of society. Ending this pandemic will require scientists to develop ways of diagnosing, treating and preventing the disease, and the public is understandably eager to know how close scientists are to these goals. However, scientists often struggle to effectively communicate their research to non-experts, and both politicians and the media are imperfect intermediaries. Using examples relevant to COVID-19, this talk will help non-scientists to evaluate what scientists say and understand what they really mean. It will also provide advice for effectively discussing technical information with lay audiences.

Objectives:

- Understand the “business” of science

- Learn how to evaluate the who, what, and why of science communication

- Identify common unreported limitations of scientific studies

- Discuss ways scientists and non-scientists can communicate more effectively
